"She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.... In her hands she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.... She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come." -- Proverbs 31:13, 19, 24-25

Welcome!

Thank you for your interest! I named my business "Sense and Sensibility," because my designs are for lovers of Romantic fashions who want beautiful clothing that fits nicely. I create all my patterns with period details, while using standardized American measurements to make fitting a snap.
All patterns are printed on sturdy white paper and come packaged with illustrated instructions. In addition, I have online instructions with photographs and extra tips for my most popular patterns and will continue to add online helps as I am able. I am also always available via e-mail to answer any questions you may have about the patterns.

How can I get a catalogue?

Catalogue

All of my patterns are featured on this website, but I do also have a print catalogue, which you may order by sending a check or money order for $3 to me at 201 Rodgers Road, Rileyville, VA 22650. You can also order a copy with your Visa or MasterCard through Paypal. The catalogue includes a bonus: a beautiful Regency paper doll drawn by Kim Brecklein exclusively for Sense and Sensibility. The doll's gowns are straight from my design board!

Where do you get your ideas?

I've been in love with vintage fashions since I was a little girl, and I started recreating vintage clothing when I was a teenager. I have a large selection of original 1900-1959 patterns and fashion advertisements from which I draw my inspiration. Be sure to check my Vintage Images section to see part of my collection. I love to study original garments, learn from old methods and improve upon them when I can.

Do you make children's patterns?

Not at present, but I have certainly received enough requests to justify designing some! I may consider that if time permits. In the meantime, let me recommend Harper House Patterns, which carries thousands of historical patterns, including many for children. Be sure to order their print catalogue, since they don't show everything online.

Do your patterns come in different sizes?

Most of my patterns are sized from 8-18, and all pattern sizes are included in one envelope. My 1910s Tea Gown pattern includes sizes 8-26 in one envelope. I am currently working on a new edition of the Regency Gown pattern in sizes 18-26, and that will be available separately.

How do I place an order?

You can order all of my patterns online on my pattern page, and I can accept Visa or MasterCard through Paypal. You may also order via snail mail if you prefer. Please see my Ordering Information for my address and shipping options. If you would like to be placed on my (e)mailing list to receive periodic updates, including notices when my latest patterns are available, simply fill out the ListBot form (not the Feedback form) below. Please be sure to check your e-mail address twice. If you don't hear from me, it is probably because I do not have the right address. (AOL addresses give me the most problems. Make sure your mailbox is set to accept mail from me, or the message will just come back. Thanks.)

What if I need help with a pattern?

I am always available to answer your questions via e-mail. If you want a step-by-step walkthrough of my Regency Gown or 1910s Tea Gown patterns, I now offer online classes for these patterns through The Costume Classroom! Classes for each pattern are scheduled several times during the year and include information on fine tailoring techniques, period embellishments and more. When you sign up for a class, you get a password that allows you to read each new weekly lesson and gives access to an exclusive message board for students. Come join the fun!

Where can I find reproduction fabrics to use with your patterns?

I have posted many links to superb fabric companies. Two of my favorites for the Regency period are Patchworks and White Fox Trading Company. Patchworks also has great prints appropriate for the Edwardian Apron pattern.

What if I need someone else to sew for me?

I have a large section of links to seamstresses who reproduce historical garments on my Costume Links page. All of the seamstresses to whom I have links are trustworthy, reliable and talented.

Do you wholesale your patterns?

Yes, I do! If you run a retail business, I am happy to be able to offer you wholesale prices on my patterns. Please feel free to contact me for more information. I also offer discounts for group orders (4-H, Girl Scouts, homeschool co-ops, etc.).

How can I contact you?
